The Zodiacs: Cancer’s Flower

Calling all Cancers, aka the crustaceans of the zodiacs – your birth flower is the delicate white rose. Quite fitting, no? Read on to learn why this is Cancer’s flower and what it symbolises.

Cancer’s characteristics

Before we get into Cancer’s birth flower, we need to put anyone born under this sign under the microscope. On the positive side, they’re:

  • Intuitive
  • Compassionate
  • Protective
  • Emotional

But they can also be:

  • Manipulative
  • Negative
  • Impressionable
  • Unable to let go

Cancer’s flower: white rose

What does a white rose symbolise?

White roses traditionally symbolise peace, purity, positivity and emotion. Since they represent purity, they’re often a popular choice for weddings.

History of white roses

Despite being quite neutral in appearance, white roses have a long and colourful history. Back in Ancient Greece, it was believed that white roses symbolise Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. According to legend, roses used to be white until the goddess accidentally cut her foot on a thorn while running after one of her lovers, Adonis. In doing so, her blood spilled onto the petals and caused them to turn red.

In the 15th century during Henry VII’s reign, the white rose was also the symbol of the Duke of York who famously faced off with the red-rose Lancaster family – giving the War of Roses its name.

Why is Cancer a white rose?

Born between the 22nd June and 22nd July, Cancers are soft and gentle souls. Ruled by the Moon, this water sign is deeply emotional and a little bit sensitive (in a good way) – so it’s really no surprise their flower is the white rose, a bloom with beautiful, delicate petals. But don’t let their mushy side completely fool you. Represented by the crab, Cancers have a hardened exterior and a piercing pinch – just like the thorns on a rose. Once they let you in, however, you’ll have someone that will always be in your corner. As an incredibly intuitive star sign, Cancers can effortlessly pick up on the energies in any room. Think of them as a blank white canvas (or white rose) that can take on the emotions of everyone around them.

Other Cancer zodiac flowers

While Cancer’s flower is the white rose, there are other flowers associated with this water sign. They include the:

  • Water lily
  • Delphinium
  • Lotus
  • Blue violet
