History of pansies

Pansies are members of the violet family and originated in Europe. It is said that the juice of a pansy is a love potion. In Roman mythology, it is believed that one of cupid's arrows hit the flower and granted it magic for inducing love. How romantic!

Pansies were one of Queen Victoria's favourite flowers for their unique patterns and that's how they became so popular in England. The pansy species was bred and mutated to create new varieties of vibrant colours. Today, there are over 500 species of pansies, all unique with their impressive designs.

Why is the birth flower for Capricorn a pansy?

Born between 22nd December and 20th January, Capricorns are like the ultimate powerhouses of the zodiac, with their ambitious nature and unwavering determination to succeed. And just like them, their birth flower, the pansy, is a small but mighty force.

Interestingly, the word "pansy" is derived from the French word "pensée", which means "to think", "a thought", or "idea". This is fitting for our earth sign; with their persistence and high work ethic, they are always switched on, constantly thinking about the next thing.

But the real secret to pansies' popularity is their ability to self-seed and multiply, and Capricorns have a similar talent for building and scaling their successes. They are self-starters and don't wait for opportunities to come to them - they create their own opportunities through hard work and determination. If they want something done, they’ll do it themselves.

Other Capricorn zodiac flowers

Although pansies match perfectly to our dedicated zodiac, Capricorn shares connections with some other flower friends:

  • Baby breath
  • African violet
  • Carnations
  • Jasmine

Capricorn flower: Baby breath

The gentle, delicate blooms of baby's breath are a perfect match for Capricorns, who may appear reserved on the outside but have inner strength and reliability. Much like how baby breath is often used as an accent flower in arrangements, Capricorns are the glue that keeps everything together and are always ready to support those around them.
