The history of chrysanthemums

Chrysanthemums have a long and fascinating history. First cultivated in 15th Century B.C. in China, they were originally used in herbal remedies. According to legend, they were believed to have the power of life, and would often be found in salads or brewed into teas. Chrysanthemums were so beloved that they were given their own festival, the ‘Festival of Happiness’. It wasn’t until they found their way into the western countries that they got their current name, which comes from the Greek word ‘chrys’ which means gold, and ‘anthemon’ which means flower. Chrysanthemums were all originally yellow, hence the name!

Why is Virgo’s birth flower chrysanthemums?

Take one look at a chrysanthemum and you’ll see why it’s Virgo’s flower. Born between the 23rd of August and 22nd of September, this zodiac sign is a natural born perfectionist. They work hard to make everything look effortless and put together, and obsess over the details – much like our lovely symmetrical chrysanthemums, made up of hundreds of perfectly aligned petals. Virgos are also very grounded individuals. So it’s no wonder chrysanthemums, with their tall, thick and deeply-rooted stems, are a perfect match for this earth sign. Represented by a woman, the goddess of wheat and agriculture, Virgos are bound by friendship. While it can be a little tricky to get to their centre (like chrysanthemums), you’ll have a friend for life once you’re let in.
